Amoeba Races 2019: No camping or RVs on-site!

In my enthusiasm to communicate Terry Stanley’s invitation to the 2019 Amoeba Races (seen again below) I failed to account for the fact that Terry has sold his farm in Amsterdam and moved to a secluded piece of land in the Ozark mountains near Theodosia, Missouri.

Terry informs me that the camping situation on his property is somewhat less than optimum, unless you like rocky and unlevel terrain, as well as various and sundry visitors, or “night creatures”. Night creatures include coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, black bear, skunks, venomous snakes, biting insects, and the occasional redneck with banjo, if you needed any additional encouragement.

As if that wasn’t enough, his retreat is NOT accessible to long vehicles or those that are low to the ground. While it does not appear that four-wheel drive is required, RVs are not recommended! (Though it's probably not nearly as bad as I make it sound!)

Fortunately, Theodosia and other nearby villages have numerous rental cabins and hook ups for RVs. One hour east of Branson, MO, near several big lakes and small towns, overnight accommodations and RV spots should be relatively easy to arrange.

Terry can provide you with more specific details. That is all - carry on!

pictureAMOEBA RACES 2019 INVITATION

Amoeba Races! For those in the know, Amoeba Races are the grand-daddy of SSN-680 reunions. The first known Amoeba Race was held at Ocean Shores, WA, on August 29, 1998. Attended by crew members from the late 70’s (and Ted Mercure) the festivities of the day charted the course for USS William H. Bates reunions to come.

For those of you that dream of simpler times, when a group of shipmates could gather and reminisce (OK, lie their way through dozens of sea stories) without much advance notice, cost, or effort, your time has come. For those of you that can’t wait to reconnect until June of next year and REGROUPEX 20, this may be just the thing.

Terry Stanley has thrown out the invitation to all of us to join him on his farm in Theodosia, Missouri, on September 21st of this year for another of the much-heralded Amoeba Races. He has offered to smoke 4 or 5 slabs of ribs, chickens, brats, hot dogs, etc., and whip up a batch of beans for anyone who wants to spend the day on the farm with all the similarly inclined shipmates willing to muster.

Sternshot

For those of you that know me, you know that I go to great lengths to be precise, accurate, and truthful, having had those character traits molded into me by every mentor I have enjoyed, starting with my father, including a few COs in the Greater Pacific Yacht Club, and a handful of influential individuals in the days since. However, one might conclude, some might say obviously, that brevity or an economy of words are not counted among my strengths.

My personal standard is humorously reflected in the aphorism, "I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken!" When an oversight becomes apparent, though it pains me to admit the error, I take ownership and respond quickly to make amends. So, to Terry Stanley and all of you that must endure another email, my apologies.

Despite the obstacles in the path to perfection, I shall endeavour to persevere.
