The idea of a memorial to honor American submariners originated as a proposal to the Executive Board. The first mention in an offical base document is in the JAN 2007 minutes and this document tells of a presentation and approval of the idea to the membership.
A three man project team consisting of Alan Syler, Brian Meagher, and R. Lipps and was appointed and the creation of the memorial was underway.
In FEB 2007 Alan Syler presented to the members the “National Cemetery Monument Project” Fundraising Chart and shared some of the problems encountered. Necessary approvals were obtained.
In MAR 2007 Alan Slyer, now Monument Project Chairman, reported on the fund raising progress and that the fund raising was projected to end on 30 JUN 2007. He then requested funds to start production of the monument stone. A vote followed and the request for funds was approved unanimously.
That month also saw a visit to the National Cemetery by Luther Tinsley, Dick Noble, and Larry Page. These gentlemen looked at the facility and its ability to support the dedication ceremony. The Circle of Honor was chosen as the location and Larry Page was to arrange a portable public address system for the dedication.
In APR 2007, the Monument Fund Report was at just under 75% of goal and a check was issued to start production on the monument.
The MAY 2007 minutes report that more than 100% of the required cost was raised and memorial production had started.
Construction of the memorial continued in JUN 2007 while Haddo Base waited patiently.
In JUL 2007 Alan Syler reported that the monument engraving has been completed by the contractor and that the stone would be ready to be placed at the Chattanooga National Cemetery, Circle of Honor, the following week. Alan provided the members with an image of the monument for their viewing pleasure.
SEP 2007 the Monument Dedication Committee reported that the dedication program was complete and invitations would be sent out soon. Richard Noble and Larry Page completed the mailing and preparation work. The program outline was review with those present.
On 13 OCT 2007 the memorial was dedicated.
