The Master Sailing List is officially on-line. Many of you have explored our test version, and seen how the information that Mark Gray has collected over the years has been turned into a state of the art, on-line database that you can use to collect and organize information on your missing shipmates. No longer do you have to file notes, organize spreadsheets, and try to keep track of it all - you can transfer what you have to the on-line Master Sailing List and share it with all of us.
Our Missing Shipmate Coordinators Mark Gray and Kieth Jeffers are enlisting assistance to start locating as many of these shipmates as we can. If you have time to volunteer, even for one or two shipmates, please contact them through the Contact Us page.
How do you use the Master Sailing List?
First, select the Master Sailing List from the Sailing List menu. You can also choose Missing Shipmates, as that is just a preselected subset of the Master Sailing List.
You can sort the Master Sailing List by Last Name, First Name, Date On Board, Date Departed, and Status. To sort, just click on the header at the top of the columns. You'll notice a little triangle appear next to the name to indicate whether the sort is ascending or descending. Clicking it again toggles the sort in the opposite direction, and clicking it a third time returns the column to 'not sorted' status.
Status is important on this site. Registered means the shipmate is currently a registered user here on SSN-680.org. Contacted means the shipmate has been located and informed regarding the site, but is not currently registered. Missing means exactly that - we don't know where he is. Declined indicates the shipmate has been contacted and does not want to register with us. Deceased means exactly that, and before you get snappy, this whole list is going to end up there one of these days. I suggest we purchase a bottle of Gran Marnier, the great mariner himself, and put it in a safe deposit box for the last surviving crew member to toast the shipmates that have gone before, but perhaps I'm being a bit maudlin.
You can also search for names, dates, etc. The simple search is the way to find a name, simply type it in and hit return. The advanced search lets you construct more complicated searches, like all RC div personnel from 10/81 to 8/85. To search for Dates, they must be in the format mm/dd/yyyy, even though only the month and year is displayed.
The Master Sailing List also lets you view details about a person by clicking on the first or last name. The detail view provides other information that can help locate missing shipmates, and lets you enter what you know about a person to help the search team locate an individual. Once the shipmate is located and registered, the Registered list becomes the master, so the Master Sailing List does not need to be updated after a user registers. Over time, we will integrate the data from both, so their isn't any duplication, but other things are more pressing right now.
So it's brain dump time now. Get out your old watchbills, photos, and notebooks, and get everything you know about your missing shipmates into the Master Sailing List so we can find them before we run out of time. Remember, even if you aren't looking for someone, you may know something about that person that will help someone who is. Add all the names and details you can remember and help make the Master Sailing List complete.
If you want to talk about missing shipmates, swap photos, or share stories about them, check out the Looking for Shipmates forum in the Scuttlebutt.
In the meantime, get hot - you're dink!
