P.O.D.

Last night many of you received the first text message sent from the www.ssn-680.org website and the USS WILLIAM H. BATES (SSN 680) Association.

This feature works hand-in-hand with our Familygram newsletter emailing system, and creates a new way to stay connected with you, especially in the case where your email address or mailing address has not been updated.

What do I need to know, you ask?

First, we protect your privacy. You will not receive advertising or nuisance texts. The system can only be used by administrators of the website, and for now, that means me!

Second, all texts will come to you through this phone number: 269.234.1751. This is the text phone number for the USS WILLIAM H. BATES (SSN 680) Association, so create a contact on your phone with this number, and then you will see who the text is from immediately.

Don’t assign the number to me (Brad Williamson) because texts to that number do not go to my phone - only to the web server. I get notified, but you may not get an immediate response.

Third, if you don’t want to get texts from the Association, then let me know, or simply reply to the next text you receive from 269.234.1751 with the one word in all caps, STOPTEXT. You will receive an email confirming your unsubscribing, and that’s it!

Fourth, don’t expect to get more than 1 or 2 texts a month. I may text everyone when an important Familygram goes out, or maybe I won’t. I may text information I consider timely and vital, but then, I may not. It costs 0.75-1.5 cents per text, so I’ll try to keep my wild texting under control! We’ll see how it’s usage works out, and how popular it is, so if you have feedback, post a comment here.

Fifth, you don’t have to worry about me texting you at zero-dark-thirty and busting up your beauty sleep. This isn’t the boat, and I’m not the COB! I will generally schedule texts during the daylight hours in most places, so unless you’re on the dark side of the world, you shouldn’t be bothered.

Six, if you did not receive a text yesterday evening (2 July) then your profile does not have your current mobile phone number. Which means, you guessed it, you’re dink!

So get hot, update your profile, and make sure we don’t lose contact with you.

(Being the great guy that I am, I’ll even update your profile for you if you email me or message me with your mobile phone number, because that’s what shipmates do!)
