P.O.D.

It has been a busy few weeks at SSN-680.org so a brief update is in order.

The biggest battle has been a bug that has caused the “white screen” that users were seeing when they logged in, or if they were able to log in, when they attempted to view a User Profile. What a headache. While it has not been fixed, it has been localized to a particular piece of code, and that code has been turned off while we get it sorted. It still shows up occasionally for admins, but it shouldn’t be a problem for the rest of you. Log in, and let me know if you run into the problem.

Second, we have finally established a full SSL protocol for the site. What this means in plain language is that the entire site, including your log in and registration, is now protected by encryption during your access to the site. You can confirm this in your browser by looking for the little lock in the URL window (in Chrome, the lock and https: turn green, your mileage may vary!) Your browsing is much more secure, and you can remain confident that we are actively working to protect your identity and your experience on the ssn-680.org website.

Third, I’ve been cleaning up the Rank/Rate fields and the Department/Division fields to make them uniform so that searching by Rank or Division would be more successful. If you’d take a few minutes to log in, it would be helpful if you’d Edit Your Profile and update your Rank/Rate and Department/Division. Simply click your name in the Current Watchsection on the starboard side of the page and in your User Profile, choose Edit>>Update Your Profile. Don’t forget to click “Update” when you are done.

Fourth, I’ve been going through the Scuttlebutt forum, doing general field day and reorganization, so there has been a lot of activity. Updating the ‘Looking For Shipmates’ section to match the actual registration is in progress, which is bringing a lot of long lost shipmates to the top of the list (Click the ‘Recent’ tab). Feel free to turn to and lend a hand tracking down some of our long lost shipmates.

Finally, on that theme, you can look forward to an incentive program to encourage you to locate missing shipmates and get them to register on the website. Details to follow in a day or two, but Rick Campbell, author of The Trident Deception, Empire Rising, and the newly released Ice Station Nautilus, has generously offered some signed copies of his books which we will use to reward the registration of missing shipmates over the next few months.

Stay tuned!

Taking it upon myself to speak for all 680 shipmates, I salute with a Loud and Resounding BRAVO-ZULU.
