Terry Fessner and I were talking the other day, and Terry suggested that sharing our current enrollment on the website might help put some perspective on our efforts to identify every sailor who ever sailed on the Bates, and how much work we have to do to get them connected through the organization.
So I put together a tool to pull the numbers out of the database, and I’m working on a module where that will stay current automatically so you can check it whenever you log into the site.
In the meantime, here are the numbers as of 03 SEP 2018.

You can see we have a long way to go, and though we have identified 130 shipmates not previously listed on the Master Sailing List through the MSL Missing Shipmate Research project, we have only contacted 63 and located an additional 192, simply because it takes an incredible amount of time to research and track down missing individuals. Then we have to convince them of the value of registering, and sometimes, one of us is not enough, especially if we didn’t serve with the shipmate in question.
If you want to help, reach out to me, let me know, and I’ll walk you through how to get the information you need. If each of us took on a handful of our shipmates, we could wrap this up pretty quickly.
If detective work and phone calls aren’t your thing, you can still help financially. Donating to fund the Master Sailing List Research project (on each page of the website), or simply buying a hat or challenge coin from the Ship’s Store helps us obtain the rosters and personnel diaries from the National Archives that will make our sailing list complete.
Either way, you help would be appreciated, and as the Eternal Patrol numbers suggest, there’s not a moment to lose!
