CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Steven Loveless, 24, of 2060 Glass road NE, was burned to death in a fiery one-car crash on old Highway 30 Sunday night.

Dr. Joseph Galles, assistant county medical examiner, said identification of the victim was made by study of dental records.

The Iowa highway patrol said the accident happened at 10:10 p.m. five miles west of Mt. Vernon.

Loveless was westbound when he apparently lost control of his car while rounding a curve. Authorities said the vehicle went into the north ditch, struck a farm driveway, and was hurled through the air, coming to rest on its top, trapping the driver inside. The vehicle then burst into flames.

Steven Michael Loveless was born March 15, 1952, and had lived all his life in Cedar Rapids. He had served in the submarine service of the United States Navy from 1970 until 1975, and was employed by Cherry-Burrell Corp. at the time of his death. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School in 1970, and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church of Cedar Rapids.

Survivors are his mother, Jean Loveless; his father. LeRoy, and stepmother. Beverly Loveless; two brothers, Terry and Douglas, and his grandmother, Mrs. Carl Jungjohann, all of Cedar Rapids.

Services: Turner Chapel West at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Don Martin of Grace Baptist Church in Marion.

Burial: Linwood.  Friends may register at Turner Chapel West. The casket will not be opened at any time.

Our shipmate has passed on before us.

Whether by enemy action, the remorseless sea, or the ravages of time and age,
we must accept that God has called you to where we cannot yet follow.

We commend your body to the deep, and your soul to God Almighty.

May God grant you fair winds and following seas.

Godspeed, shipmate.

We will miss you...

"All mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language; and every chapter must be so translated. God employs several translators; some pieces are translated by age, some by sickness, some by war, some by justice; but God's hand is in every translation, and his hand shall bind up all our scattered leaves again for that library where every book shall lie open to one another...

"No man is an island, entire of itself, every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.

"Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

John Donne

Nunc lento sonitu dicunt, morieris.
Now this bell tolling softly for another, says to me, Thou must die.
