1977 - May - SUBASE New London, Groton, Connecticut

The U.S.S. William H. Bates (SSN-680), ties up at the pier, having returned to Groton, Connecticut in May of 1977. A warm afternoon, everyone gone but the Duty Section, all quiet topside gives shipmates a chance to catch up on the scuttlebutt, relax in the sun, feed the swans, and generally enjoy life in a manner not often experienced in the submarine community. Life, at least on the boat, didn't get much better than this, except of course, you were stuck with the duty, and when you looked longingly at the brow, knowing it wasn't your turn for liberty, you just couldn't help but imagine that last trip across, that last trip in the now not so distant future, at least for one shipmate!
